Copper is fast emerging as a versatile and creative element. Many designers are using the metal in accessories, embroideries and apparel embillishments. The rising popularity of copper on the runways can be attributed to its rich, sensuous appeal and easy wearability. Stark siver and gold now appear to be passe as designers veer towards dull-gold and bronze hues. Copper tones compliment all body types and skin colors.

Metallic finish is a rage on the ramps all over and it looks like the glamorous trend is here to stay.

Victoria Beckham took her sleek, svelte and sophisticated image a bit further and released her own line of fashionable clothing at the New York Fashion Week. The collection was put on display for selected guests at the Waldorf Hotel. Posh was also seen sporting a spiky crop- perhaps to complement her prized creations.

Admitting that she always wanted to be a fashion designer, Victoria seems very excited about her debut collection that is targeted mostly at the fashionable elite. Each dress bears the “Victoria trademark” and adequately represents her personal dressing style. The dresses are body-hugging with hemlines dropping below the knees. According to Victoria, her “classy” creations would suit voluptuous and curvy women the most. If her claim is to be believed, it would be a welcome change for larger women who often miss the fashion bus as most trends are often specific to waif-like figures.

Mandira Wirk’s Autumn/Winter 2008/2009 collection was a major highlight at the India Fashion Week this year. Wirk used a retro-metallic de luxe theme for her latest creations.

Metallic shades like oxidized silver, matte gold, brushed brass and plated copper were used extensively to complement feminine and sophisticated designs. The color palette and styles revived the glamorous flavor of the 80’s.

Some of the creations were embellished with sequins, embroideries and lurex yarns that accentuated the metallic effect of the fabrics.

The silhouette was highly retro with cinched waists, pleats, frills and gatherings. Fitted tops and cropped jackets were teamed up with balloon skirts in order to celebrate the female form. Asymmetrical cuts, irregular hemlines and innovative necklines were prominent in most outfits. The shoulder line was greatly emphasized with the use of gathers and wings.

The hallmark characteristic of the collection was the unconventional use of flowy lurex with woolen mélange knits, checked cottons, classic houndstooth and suiting material. Metallic piping and seams were used to enhance the cut and style of many creations.

Sophisticated retro glamour with a dash of metallic shimmer was Mandira Wirk’s sartorial statement for the season.

Tatiana went on to designing for such popular clothing labels such as Bill Blass of New York, Tierre Mugler, and Levi Strauss. She even moved to Madridfor 3 years to develop a line with a Spanish designer. Her recent move to L.A. began with designing a salsa line for salsa dancers! Hay Caliente!

Celebrity Sightings: The Tatiana Andrade Collection has been seen in Tinsletown worn by up & coming Actress Alex Meneses at the Hispanic Heritage Awards, David Lago/Days of Our Lives, and Nestor Carbonell/Suddenly Susan to name a few! The hit television shows Dharma & Gregg and King of Queens have purchased several of her pieces. MTV is currently checking out the line for a few upcoming specials!

In the 100^th year of its campaign, cosmetic giant Max Factor has signed-up Gisele Bundchen as their new brand ambassador. The stunning Brazilian supermodel replaced Carmen Electra who had been associated with the brand for the past three years. Although the two beautiful models cannot be compared, Max Factor probably feels that Bundchen’s sultry appeal represents the spirit of the brand more effectively as the company is now aiming towards a complete image makeover. Gisele Bundchen’s recent successes have been instrumental in landing her this mega-deal.

The annual Caribbean Fashion Week 2008 (CFW) took place on June 11-16 in Kingston, Jamaica. The event was held at the National Indoors Sports Centre at Independence Park, in the National Stadium complex. It was one of the most high profile fashion events in the country and it truly rocked the crowds. This year, CFW reached its five-year mark.

Caribbean Fashion Week showcased some of the most spectacular fashion shows and couture creations by prominent and popular designers from the Caribbean region. The designs were a reflection of the lively Caribbean culture and each one of them brought the tropical spirit alive with vivid colors and flowy fabrics.

The CFW 2008 is touted as Caribbean’s biggest fashion event ever. Saint International stole the show with a fabulous outdoor fashion show called “Fashion Block”. Saint International also hosted an elite All-White Brunch at the exotic Strawberry Hill where the Saint Style Awards were announced.

A bevy of celebrity designers and international models made it a star-studded event. The event was divided into three segments- Friday night featured the Young Designers and the Caribbean Masters showed their stuff on Saturday night. Sunday night was exclusively dedicated to the International Collections.  Rapper and movie star turned fashion mogul Eve, also showcased her own fashion line “Fetish”. Notable models included Nia Long, Vanessa A. Williams and Mashonda Dean among many others.

International lingerie designer Marlies Dekkers seems to have redefined the concept of ‘women empowerment’. It is true that men are fascinated by and attracted to women in power; it is also true that a woman in sexy lingerie always wins over one in a business suit! At least that’s what Dekkers seems to believe. Not that a great pair of little nothings can land the world at your feet, Dekkers seems to have a valid point there.

After 15 years of brand success, she is all set to organize a retrospective show at Rotterdam’s Kunsthal wherein she proposes to showcase and highlight her various inspirations. The show traverses through many inspirational forms like Renaissance art, theater and architecture. The versatile themes revolve around femininity, eroticism, bondage and control. For her very first show in 1991, the designer raked a controversy by parading her collection through a red-light area in Amsterdam. Dekkers also believes that incomplete revelation of physical assets adds to the mystery and charm of sexuality and strives to incorporate the idea in her designs.

Not only has she proved to be a creative designer but has also established herself as a successful entrepreneur. She won the Prix Veuve Clicquot for Businesswoman of the Year in 2007. Marlies Dekkers stores are scattered across Holland, Antwerp, Berlin, Paris and Bangkok.
